E-SCOOTER SAFETY AND THE LAW |
Dear all,
Your local Safer Neighbourhood Team would like to remind residents about the rules surrounding the use of e-scooters. We continue to receive reports of privately owned e-scooters being ridden on public roads, pavements and other public places. Many people are unaware that, under current legislation, privately owned e-scooters cannot be legally used on public roads, cycle lanes or pavements. They may only be used on private land with the permission of the landowner. The only e-scooters that can be legally ridden in public are those operating as part of an approved rental scheme. Users of rental e-scooters must be 18 years of age or older, hold a valid driving licence, and comply with the conditions of the rental scheme whilst riding responsibly. When using a rental e-scooter, please remember: Riding on the pavement is an offence and can put pedestrians at risk, particularly children, elderly residents, and those with disabilities. Rental e-scooters should be ridden on the road and in permitted cycle lanes in accordance with the rules of the rental scheme. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to be aware of the rules before purchasing an e-scooter for a child, as privately owned e-scooters being sold are not legal to use in public places. By using e-scooters safely and legally, we can help reduce the risk of injury and keep our roads, cycleways and pavements safe for everyone.
Thank you for your support. North Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team | ||
